AKA M.M.A.D May 2020 Jermaine McLeod
Psychotherapist
My name is Jermaine McLeod, I am a qualified Art Psychotherapist registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). I have an undergraduate BA degree in Graphical Communication and a Masters in Art Psychotherapy.
In addition to my academic qualifications, I have a background in support work and have a vast experience in supporting a broad spectrum of individuals (both adults and young people). I have previously worked with adults with mental health issues such as paranoid schizophrenia who have experienced suicidal ideation and used art as a means to express themselves and I also have more than 10 years’ experience working with young people with a range of issues including young offenders and asylum seekers. I have 4 years’ experience working in particular with children and young people with autism, where art was used as a mechanism to assist them with communication.
I am currently working as an Art-Psychotherapist on a self-employed basis predominantly with an organisation called Latimer Community Art Therapy (LCAT)[1]. The organisation came into existence due to the unfortunate Grenfell fire in June 2017 working with children who have experienced trauma. I started working for LCAT in October 2017 with young people in a community centre called Venture, co-facilitating an art psychotherapy open group until July 2018. I then began working through LCAT in a primary school named St Thomas, originally with children who witnessed the Grenfell fire within the surrounding homes however, it became apparent that the students were exhibiting other difficulties which could also benefit from therapeutic sessions due to other traumatic experiences such as, loss, separation, anxiety, low self-esteem, selective mutism, chronic health conditions and young people who were unable to regulate their emotions due to an array of
difficulties in their home environment such as family dynamics.
Art psychotherapy is a state registered (HCPC) psychological therapy that uses art
media as its primary form of communication within a therapeutic relationship.
This particular type of therapy became a portal for young people to allow them to
regulate their emotions in a safe space and enable a self-led approach to
empower and allow them to reach their full potential before they transition
from primary to secondary school. I currently work at St Thomas school and in
January 2019 I started also working at Henry Dickens Community Centre with
adolescents who encounter challenging behaviour and are on the verge of being
suspended and expelled indefinitely from school due to a range of issues.
